Africa’s Food Crisis:
The world is in the grip of a global food crisis. As the costs of staple food increases at an unprecedented level, the livelihoods of millions of Africans are threatened. The situation is worsened by drought coupled with the socio-economic impact of AIDS. Agriculture, which is the mainstay of millions of Africans, is consequently affected, impacting on food security and nutrition and threatening democracy. Is a Green Revolution the answer to solve the food crisis? Are bio fuels a long term practical solution to energy problems? How does this affect the political-economic relationship between people, land, food and resources? To what extent can aid and trade policies of donor nations (e.g Norway) address this problem and enhance welfare for the poor in Africa?
